Atlas Copco's history in South Africa
South Africa's relationship with Atlas Copco dates back to 1926, at which time Delfos Limited became the official agent for Atlas Diesel in South Africa.
In 1947, Delfos Limited went on to form an official association with Atlas Diesel. This was followed by a name change in 1956 to Delfos & Atlas Copco (Pty) Ltd due to the company no longer operating in the diesel business. The name 'Copco' is derived from Compagnie Pneumatique Commerciale, being the name of a Belgian subsidiary.
Atlas Copco purchased the remaining shares in Delfos and the company's name changed to Atlas Copco SA (Pty) Ltd.
The company has grown into a major force in the South African mining and construction industries and today employs over 800 people in South Africa.
